Koppert Cress, a grower and supplier of micro-vegetables in the Netherlands, launched a pilot for storing warm water beneath the ground.
Koppert Cress aims to enhance the sustainability of its business operations and reuse as much heat from its greenhouses as possible. This pilot explores the underground storage of water at 40°C, which is higher than the 25°C hitherto permitted for this purpose. The Province of South-Holland approved the pilot based on the anticipated reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emission. The province and Koppert Cress concluded a ‘green deal’ in support of this venture.
Savings
The underground storage of warm water is anticipated to yield a 400,000m3 savings in natural gas and 900,000kg of CO2. The actual effects and savings realised by the pilot will be monitored in the next few years to come. The first results will be known after a year.
